Everyone’s favorite fatty fruit can be used for more than just guacamole.
It turns out that fruit is best consumed in the form of, well, fruit.
Do you throw fruits peels in the garbage? After you read this I believe you’ll think again before you discard them.
We already know that fruits peels contain minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc and potassium. As for apples, most of the fruit’s vitamin C is in the peel. Banana peel is rich in lutein, vitamin A, C and B complex. Pineapple peels are full of vitamin C, bromelain and fibre. And papaya peels are rich in vitamin A and C.
Citrus fruits such as orange, lime, or tangerines contain 20% more antioxidants in their peels than their pulp…these peels help to lower cholesterol.
Cherry, pear, apple, plum, and peach peels contain insoluble fibres which help the intestines to function properly.
Of course we all worry about the pesticides on the fruits and vegetables we consume, so the best is to choose organic and shop locally. Just washing fruit and vegetables with fresh running water isn’t enough, be sure to immerse them for at least 15 minutes in a solution of fresh water with drops of Fruit & Veggie soak (this helps remove surface pesticides, wax and chemical residues). Rinse thoroughly using a small brush to remove any other residue left.
After that, we can use our creativity to invent awesome dishes using fruit peels. I bet people won’t believe when you tell them what your creation is made of!
Today we have an example of this…a delicious tea made of banana peel…
. When you eat bananas, keep the peels in the freezer,
. When you have enough banana peels (about 6 – 8), put them in a pot and let them defrost . It takes about 2 hours and they will turn black – it’s ok!
. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and put the banana peels evenly on it,
. Take them to the oven (at 350C) until dry, it will take about 1 hour,
. Let them cool and then break the peels with your hand. If you want you can put them, 1 peels at a time, on a blender or food processor,
. Keep them in a dry container with a lid.
How to make your tea: 1 teaspoon is enough for a full cup but you can add more or less as you prefer. It taste almost like a black tea with a hint of banana and if you can add a drop of honey or stevia if you like.
Note: because banana (and banana peel) is rich in tryptophan – a natural antidepressant, which regulates serotonin levels in the brain and improves people’s mood – it could help you to have a better sleep!
