Food waste is often mentioned in the news lately. Forty percent of food in America goes to waste and the annual estimated retail value of wasted food in the United States is more than $165 billion. Food is also the largest component of waste in our landfills. As food rots, it emits methane, a gas 20 times more harmful than CO2.

But there’s good news: most food waste is preventable.

  1. I believe this increasing attempt to address hunger with waste is really problematic for so many reasons. And yet it’s almost becoming a cliched reaction to the problem of waste. Waste must be dealt with at various levels of marketing and systems management. Hunger must be seen as a problem of poverty. We can’t use waste to not act on poverty; we can let the fact of hunger justify waste. By all means, feed people, but let’s not institutionalise a waste to hunger approach. Charity isn’t the answer.
