Around the world food waste occurs at every step of the food chain. Globally, about 24% of food calories produced for people get wasted on the journey from farm to plate, and in the U.S. that percentage is even higher. But how that happens is very different depending on where you live, as this chart from the World Resources Institute shows:

  1. 33%is wasted in India. In my last organisation they wanted to produce enzymes to control wastage. Stupid idea, I told the Managing Board. You need better logistics, storage and distribution systems. But that would not give us business!

    • I agree with you, Rajiv. It has many ways of controlling food waste – logistics, storage and distribution system are very important. And education, of course. Most people in the world aren’t aware of the huge amount of food waste that we all create, educating and creating awareness about the subject would be a great step, a great start.
